An unknown stranger—a pregnant woman suddenly appears out of the blue in Charlie’s house. Alan thinks that she is one of Charlie’s numerous past romantic escapades. It is Berta, who ultimately recognises that the woman in question is Naomi. Naomi is Berta’s daughter before she got pregnant by Ron Weidermeier who was already married. Berta tells Naomi that in order to support herself and the coming offspring, Naomi must learn to work and be self-sufficient. Accordingly, Naomi finds a job in Charlie’s household.
It turns out that Alan is attracted towards pregnant women. The only fulfilling sex life that he had with Judith (Jake’s mom) was when she was pregnant with their son. According to Charlie this is how Jake ‘received repeated blows to his unformed head’ as a foetus and that explains the child’s behaviour. Alan, unfazed, helps Naomi out with her chores and even persuades her to let him rub her belly.
Charlie finds Berta crying inside the bathroom. He takes her round to Ron Weidermeier. There’s an explosion there as a result of which Charlie cannot use the loo. When they return, Naomi is already in labour and Alan is helping her through it all. Berta decides to give a portion of the the money she cajoled out of Weidermeier to Naomi.
